Dear Embers Families,

It’s bittersweet for me to share the letter below with you announcing Lisa Hanretty’s departure. Since I was hired last March, Lisa has been an invaluable advisor to me, not to mention a great friend. I want to share one anecdote with you that I think speaks to the kind of person she is, and what she’s given this school.

During the summer, our staff have always had reduced hours. But since it was a transition year, out of necessity, I had to spend more time in the office than what is normal just to get up to speed. Most days, late into the afternoon, it was Lisa there holding down the fort with me and cheering me on.

Every afternoon, when we’d leave around the same time, we’d part ways at the office door. I’d turn right to exit into the North parking lot from the breezeway. Lisa would turn left and walk down the South hallway to exit the school.

My mind was on a million things at the time, but eventually I started asking myself, why is Lisa exiting through the South hallway when her car is parked near mine in the North lot?

So, one day, I tailed her. And I found her in the church, spending private time in prayer before Our Lord. Here I was in the midst of the chaos of a new job, and here was a perfect example of leadership for me to emulate.

The countless minutes of prayer and sacrifice Lisa gave to Embers Academy for years and years truly enabled our current growth. I’m grateful she helped us see through a strong Annual Fund and Extravaganza this school year. I will always value her example, and Kristine and I are looking forward to many more years of friendship with the Hanrettys.

Sincerely,
Christopher Goffos
Headmaster

Dear Embers Parents,

It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter to share with you that I will be stepping down as Director of Development and departing Embers. Upon the decision for me to step down as head of school last year, I was asked if I would stay to provide support during the transition with the new head of school, and begin to build a Development Office. I have fondly reflected upon this wonderful and unique opportunity to have remained at Embers this year. It was a pleasure to be of service in this way, and I appreciated being asked.

It has been an incredible joy to have been part of this year’s transition with Mr. Goffos and Mr. Boville. They have truly accomplished many impactful things for Embers in a short amount of time. With that being said, the transition has taken place beautifully, and the administrative team is on solid ground.

Thank you for a spectacular Extravaganza 2024! The event’s goals were met on so many levels, and we have you to thank. I have always believed that the school is built upon its parents and that it flourishes because of your commitment to its mission.

Between ailing aging parents, grandchildren, my son’s wedding, and my youngest son rising to high school next year, it became clear that the time has come for me to direct my attention to these parts of my life. And with much discernment, it has been decided that my last day will be this Wednesday, March 27.

I bid farewell to all of you and your children whom I have great affection for – to Embers, the school that has been an extension of my family since the year 2000; the school that helped form and educate our eight children; and the school that I will hold dear in my heart forever.

It truly has been an honor and privilege to have been a part of this great mission. Thank you for allowing me to serve you and your families.

Respectfully with affection,
Lisa Hanretty
