Embers Academy Wins the Niles Police K-9 Contest!

The name Rocket, chosen by the Embers Academy 3rd Grade Foxes, has won the contest for the newest Niles Police K-9 dog! The Third Grade class participated in the contest along with students from St. John Brebeuf, Culver, Nelson, and Mark Twain Schools.  Students from each school picked a different name and drew pictures of the new K-9 dog.

This week Officer Daoud and Rocket started their first week of training together!

Arrival and Dismissal

A few friendly reminders regarding our drop off and pick up procedures to ensure the safety and efficiency of the process.

  • Please enter the campus at the North Entrance off of Greenwood.

  • Please do not enter from Normal as it disrupts the flow of arrival and dismissal.

  • Please do not park in the south lot, especially in the morning, as those spaces are reserved for OLR.

  • Most importantly, please drive SLOWLY as families frequently walk across the parking lot.

First Holy Communion

Please continue to keep our 2nd Graders in your prayers as they prepare for their First Holy Communion on May 22nd at St. Mary of the Angels.

The Third Grade is waiting for their chicks to hatch!

Mrs. Black lights up an egg to show 3rd Grade students the chick inside.

Recess Equipment Needed

We are still looking for donations of recess equipment, such as jump ropes, balls, Skip-its, etc. if you happen to be cleaning out your garage, and need a home for your gently-used outdoor equipment.

We are still accepting sleds — those in good shape or new — which we will store for next year’s use.  Thank you to those families who have already contributed to our recess equipment!

May 1 – Feast of St. Joseph the Worker

Saturday, May 1, is the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. St. Joseph shows us the dignity of work and the holiness of human labor.  He was a hardworking and diligent craftsman and an example to all who work hard to provide for their families.

Year of St. Joseph

Click here to read about Five Spiritual Benefits From the Year of St. Joseph.

The following are brief explanations of the titles of St. Joseph recited in the Litany to St. Joseph.

Pattern of Patience  – St. Joseph often waited patiently for God to let him know what to do next.  After uprooting his family and fleeing to Egypt to escape King Herod,  St. Joseph waited patiently until God let him know he could bring his family back to Nazareth. Joseph trusted in God’s providential care for his family.

Lover of Poverty – As a poor craftsman, St. Joseph did not have the material things that can distract us from our relationship with God. Though materially poor, he was, as a member of the Holy Family, spiritually rich. His poverty allowed him to live fully in the presence of Christ.
