Dear Families,
The Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) curriculum we teach in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade gives our students the tools they need to succeed as young writers at Embers and beyond. As the publisher puts it,
“IEW’s unique approach provides the structure that students need to develop confidence in the writing process, while gradually guiding them toward greater independence and creativity.”
Before they can begin to write well for themselves, our students first need to read and digest good writing. Appreciation and imitation naturally come before unique expression.
What better place to start than nursery rhymes and simple, lovely poems? Parents who read Mother Goose or sing nursery songs to their young children every night know the joy and love of the English language that these inspire. Similarly, the rhymes and poems memorized by our Kindergarten, First, and Second graders through IEW are my favorite part of the program.
This past fall, several First and Second Grade students proudly recited their memorized poems over the loudspeaker system during our morning announcements. We had such fun letting them showcase the fruits of their hard work that we’re going to expand the opportunity this spring. Starting now, teachers can sign their students up to recite memorized nursery rhymes and poems over the morning announcements each day.
Encourage your Sparks to share the beautiful rhymes and poetry they’ve memorized with you at home. And we’ll be sure to feature their talents in the mornings so that we can start the school day with a bit of beauty.
Sincerely,
Christopher Goffos
Headmaster
