October’s Virtue: Diligence
This month, Mrs. Black’s 3rd grade class taught us about the importance of diligence. Diligence is defined as steady, earnest, and energetic effort; it is doing what needs to be done with devotion, dedication, and determination.
Our Sparks demonstrated how diligence can be practiced every day – while doing the laundry, studying for tests, and even while playing with our siblings! They gave a wonderful presentation for our student body.

Dear Families,
In the ancient philosopher Plato’s famous book, The Republic, Socrates lays out a vision of education that begins with music and gymnastics. Before even thinking about reading, writing, and arithmetic, students should begin a proper physical education, or gymnastic training, to develop their bodies.
But just as essential in these early years is a music education to develop their souls. Done well, music education can be the first step in character formation.

Embers preschool teachers know the importance of music to our youngest Sparks, which is why they asked Mr. Sadlowski if he’d be willing to pilot a preschool music class this year. I attended their class on Thursday morning, and here’s what I saw: smiles, curiosity, focus, determination, and joy.
Mr. Sadlowski conducted a simple lesson in rhythm, a foundational building block of all music. Each student was given a percussion instrument–tambourines, bells, rattles, wood blocks, and other clangers. Leading the preschool Sparks in a steady four-beat pattern, Mr. Sadlowski taught them a lesson about unity.
As he summed up the lesson to them, “When we all just bang on the drum, that’s noise. But when we count together and stick to the beat, that can become music!”
We hope our music classes spark joy in the hearts of our students.
Sincerely,
Christopher Goffos

A Sweet Success
Thank you to Embers Parents Association for hosting a spook-tacular Trunk or Treat event! Our parking lot was packed with delightful displays for our eager trick-or-treaters. Congratulations to our trunk decor winners: the Smith Family’s Mobile Laundromat and the Sather Family’s Spark Stable!
Additionally, the EPA’s 50/50 fundraiser pot soared to over $800 this year, which will help fund this spring’s Teacher Appreciation Week. Congratulations to the Miken Family who held the winning ticket!

Honoring the Recently Departed
In celebration of All Souls Day on Wednesday, November 1, our Spanish faculty will be building an Ofrenda in the lobby to honor our recently departed. Students may bring in a picture of someone they know who has passed away in the last year. These photos will be included in our Ofrenda and we will pray for the repose of their souls during the month of November.

This past Wednesday, an Embers Open House flyer was sent home with each family. We’d love if you’d help us spread the word! Feel free to share our Open House information with your neighbors, book club, or even on the library bulletin board (with their permission, of course!)
