    “SPARK” NOTES

A Letter from Lisa…

Happy New Year! We were thrilled to welcome back all our Sparks this week from a long and restful Christmas vacation, and look forward to a great second half of the school year!

Hopefully, you heard about our school’s magnificent ‘Chain of Charity’ initiative that started during Advent,

with each link on the chain representing an act of kindness performed by a Spark. Before leaving for Christmas Break, we held an assembly to link each grade’s chains together and discovered that our Sparks’ kindness stretches as long as half of our school hallway! Your children were filled with delight to see what they had accomplished! Be on the lookout for more acts of kindness and charity from your Sparks in the months ahead!

As you know, the Embers Annual Fund drive is in full swing.  We are grateful for your support of this important initiative, and are striving to have 100% participation from our families.! To make a contribution and be a stakeholder in sparking the future, please click HERE.

Please join us for ‘Coffee and Conversation’ on the last Friday of each month to get better acquainted with one another, especially during these winter months. I look forward to joining you at the first meeting on
Friday, January 26th from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

Enjoy the long weekend with your families!

Sincerely,

Lisa Hanretty
Head of School

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Along with our New Year wishes, please accept the sincere and heartfelt gratitude of Embers faculty and staff for the EXTRAORDINARY generosity and kindness shown by so many Embers families this Christmas. We are truly grateful and feel very blessed to be a part of the Embers family.

NEW YEAR REMINDER

In January and February, a considerable amount of curriculum is covered. This is a time for cementing the academic foundation of your students.
We encourage you to:
  • Re-establish good school night routines, especially early bedtimes.
  • Keep your child as healthy as possible to minimize absences.
  • Take advantage of indoor time to promote reading. (Don’t forget to record your reading for Great America tickets!)
  • For recess fun, send complete snow gear (hats, waterproof gloves or mittens, snow pants and snow boots) to school every day.

WELCOME STUDENT TEACHERS

Embers warmly welcomes two student teachers from Villanueva Univ. in Madrid, Spain, Teresa Calcasola and Cecilia Puig. They are part of the “Embers Practicum”, majoring in elementary education, and will be with us until Feb. 13th. Thank you host families: Grandinetti (Teresa) and Barder (Cecilia). Special thanks to Mrs. Davis for all her help with this program.

COFFEE & CONVERSATION

All Embers parents are invited to a Parent Association Coffee with the Head of School on Friday, Jan. 26th from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. in the Assembly Room. It’s a perfect time to continue friendships, catch up on happenings with other families and culminated with a question and answer session with Mrs. Hanretty.

K-3rd: EPIPHANY CELEBRATED

Mrs. Keller’s K-3rd grade students celebrated the feast of the 3 Kings during Spanish classes on Tuesday. A few lucky students found baby Jesus in their special piece of cake.

WELCOME NEW ‘SPARKS’

Congratulations to the Lagunas family (Ethan, 5th & Ellsy, K) who received a very special Christmas present on Dec. 24th when Matthias Alberto (left) was born. They all celebrated Christmas day together at home. The Dutz family (Mrs. Dutz, 2nd gr. teacher) welcomed in the New Year with the birth of Connor David (right) on Jan. 2nd. We are so excited and can’t wait to meet the newest ‘Sparks’.

Three new students joined our Embers family on January 8th. We are so happy to welcome the Stanic family, Nektarios (K) & Gabriel (5th), and the Kuzuhara family, Victor (1st). What a great start to 2018!

Finally, 3rd grade welcomed a new and very rare pet amphibian to their classroom, an AXOLOTL (ax-oh-lot-ul). It is indigenous to only one place in the world, Lake Xochimilco, in central Mexico. The axolotl is not only on the endangered species list, but also the most studied amphibian by scientists because of their many unusual qualities. Ask a 3rd grade student for more details!

OUR CONDOLENCES…

Our sincere condolences to the Zielinski family (Anastasia, 2nd & Elizabeth, K) on the death of their grandma and the Adley family (Michael, PK3) on the death of their uncle over Christmas vacation. May they rest in peace.

NAT’L SCHOOL CHOICE WEEK

Many fun activities are being planned for National School Choice Week, celebrated at Embers from Monday, Jan. 22nd to Friday, Jan. 26th, including the ‘Great Kindness Challenge’. More info coming soon!

‘SNOW’ MUCH FUN!

Recess was so much fun for all the students until warm weather melted the snow. Never fear, we’ll have arctic temperatures and snow again on Monday!

BAD WEATHER AHEAD?

Just a reminder as we head into the winter season that should Embers need to close due to bad weather conditions, there are many ways to be notified. If you are included in the ‘REMIND’ cell phone option, a text will be sent to your phone. The Emergency Closing Center will also be notified. Closing info will then be available on the radio, TV, online or by email. Please click on the flier for more details.
