NOVENA @ ST. MARY / ANGELS

St. Mary of the Angels’ Novena to the Immaculate Conception began Thursday, Nov. 30th and continues until the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on Friday, Dec. 8th. Located at 1850 N. Hermitage Avenue, in Chicago, the special 7:15 p.m. Mass includes daily confessions 30 minutes before each Mass and recitation of the rosary 25 minutes before.

Embers K-5th grade students have been asked to sing at the 7:15 p.m. Novena Mass (Sunday anticipation), on Saturday, Dec. 2nd.          
Attire: Embers uniforms

Embers families will sit in the front of the church, left of the main altar. Parking is available in the church lot.

ADVENT:  HELPING OTHERS

Advent begins on Sunday, Dec. 3rd. As we prepare for the coming of Christ, Embers will focus on helping others in need.
  • Monday, Dec. 4th – Friday, Dec. 8th, we will hold a Food Drive of non-perishable food items to replenish the OLR Food Pantry for the needy.
    They are asking for:
                       j    am/preserves, 
                      peanut butter (16 oz. containers only), 
                      canned tomatoes, (whole, diced, etc.), 
                      canned tuna
  • Monday, Dec. 11th – Friday, Dec. 15th, we will hold a ‘Keep ’em Toasty’ Drive of socks, hats, gloves and mittens for the needy.
Whatever you are able to do to help is greatly appreciated. A special table will be set up each week for donation drop offs. Please ask your children to help in this spirit of giving.

POINSETTIA PICK UP

Families that ordered poinsettias are asked to pick up their plants at Embers on Thursday, Dec. 7th from 1 – 5:30 p.m. Please use the NORTH (visitor) entrance of the building. 

FEAST DAY: FRIDAY 12/8

Friday, Dec. 8th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Embers will begin the day with an all-school  rosary in the Assembly Room. Parents and siblings are encouraged to join us.

Please note that because this Feast is a Holy Day of Obligation, Embers will move our All-School Mass from Wednesday to Friday at 2 p.m. There will be NO MASS on Wednesday. As always, friends and families are welcome to join us as we honor Our Lady.

Due to Mass changing to Friday next week, Friday Gym classes will be moved to Wednesday, Dec. 6th.  Please make sure your students bring gym shoes to school that Wednesday.

Finally, the Feast Day will bring many additional OLR parishioners to the 8:15 a.m. Mass, therefore, an alternate MORNING DROP OFF plan will be implemented.  ENTER: ONLY @ Greenwood, DROP OFF: ONLY @ North Entrance.    More details to follow.

ORNAMENTS NEEDED on 12/8!

Next Friday, Dec. 8th all PK4 – 5th grade students will spend some time during recess decorating the 5 evergreen trees in the field! To create this beautiful scene, we are asking each student to donate a weatherproof ornament to place on a tree. The ornament can be handmade or something you already have and would like to donate.
A very special thank you to Fr. Chris for making this project possible!

2016-17 YEAR BOOKS 

The 2016 – 2017 yearbooks have finally arrived! Everyone that pre-ordered a book will find their copy in their oldest child’s Friday folder. We do have a few extra copies, if anyone is interested in purchasing a collection of wonderful memories from last year. Please contact the school office. Yearbooks are $20 each. Special thanks to Paula Romero for creating this beautiful keepsake! 
 

CHRISTMAS PARTIES

Embers Class Christmas Party Schedule: 
PK3:  Thursday, Dec. 14th in Paluch Hall
PK4:  Wednesday, Dec. 20th in Paluch Hall
Kindergarten:  Monday, Dec. 18th
Gr. 1-5: MOVED to Friday, Dec. 15th (Wear Red & Green Day!)
             (so we can celebrate Mass on our last day of school in 2017)

Faculty and Staff Christmas Party: Friday, Dec. 15th @ 4 p.m.

There will be NO After Care and NO Chess Scholars on Friday, Dec. 15th  due to the  Faculty and Staff Party at 4 p.m. Please make arrangements now to have your students picked up at 3:05 p.m. on the 15th.  Thank you.

COOKIES WITH SANTA

All preschool and younger children are invited to have Cookies with Santa on Monday, Dec. 18th from 10 – 11 a.m. in OLR’s Paluch Hall. The children will enjoy Christmas Read Aloud, Photos with Santa, and Christmas Caroling. Parents, please feel free to invite neighbors and friends with young children!

PK4-5th CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Embers Christmas Concert for all PK4-5th grade students will be held at Northridge Prep on Tuesday, Nov. 19th at 6:30 p.m. NRP is located 5 minutes north of Embers at 8320 N. Ballard Road in Niles. Parents, please have students arrive at 6:15 p.m. 

Concert attire:

  • PK4: Dress Clothes
  • Kindergarten- 5th: Black Bottoms (nice pants or skirts acceptable) with fancy Red, Green or White tops. No T-shirts please!
Students will also be provided with some props, but the following grade levels should plan on bringing:
  • 4th Grade: Sunglasses 
  • 5th Grade: Winter scarves
  • Mass Choir: Fun/Christmas socks

‘NEWSIES’ OUTING 

Embers Grandparents Club planned an outing with their grandchildren to the play, “Newsies”, at the Marriott Lincolnshire Theater on Sunday, Nov. 12th. Everyone had a wonderful time!

REMIND: TEXT ALERTS

TEXT ALERTS FOR SEVERE WEATHER, SCHOOL CLOSING, ETC. 

Embers is partnering with REMIND to provide our parents text alerts for emergency school closings due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. 

These text messages will go out in addition to the email that all parents will receive from Teacherease. We have used all of the parent cell phone numbers that were provided in your TADS registration.

Please be on the lookout for a text message from ‘Remind/Embers Academy’ and opt in to the service if you are interested in receiving text alerts. Any questions? Call Mrs. Thursby in the School Office. 

Embers is also included in the Emergency Closing site online and on TV.
